Facebook’s enormous investment in artificial intelligence and augmented reality is branded as revolutionary by the firm. One industry expert, however, has profound concerns about the resulting human impact.
“It’s not the technology of the metaverse that’s the concern. It’s the power that the metaverse will give to the companies that are controlling the infrastructure,” said Louis Rosenberg, an AI pioneer who designed systems for the U.S. Air Force and others. “That’s because in order to create these simulated worlds, the infrastructure needs to really know a lot about everybody who’s participating.”
Facebook isn’t the only tech giant that sees AI as the key to cementing its market supremacy. To date, Microsoft has invested more than $69B on the technology.
Japan’s NHK television takes a fresh and penetrating look at the issue.
